The Guthrie, OK Area
Guthrie is located in Logan County, about 33 miles north of downtown Oklahoma City. It started out in 1887 as the Southern Kansas Railway railroad station; bordering Kansas and Oklahoma. Eventually it was named Guthrie and developed into a town. In 1889, a post office was established. That same year the Land Run of 1889; also known as the “Hoss Race”, would take place in which 10,000 people would settle the land in 6 hours. The rapid growth and modern setup which included a local water supply, electricity, mass transportation, and underground horse and carriage parking garages made Guthrie an appealing city.
Hobart Johnstone Whitley, a pioneer who’s loan and trust company was the first brick block building in the area, would become the first governor and persuade the United States congress to designate Guthrie as the capital of Oklahoma in 1907. Oklahoma City would economically overshadow Guthrie in the 1900’s with its railroad systems and meat packing industry and by 1910 Guthrie was out and Oklahoma City was voted in as the new capital. This began the downward growth of Guthrie; falling behind Muskogee and eventually Tulsa.
Today, Guthrie is designated a National Historical Landmark due to the preservation of its 19th and 20th Victorian style architecture in the central business and residential district which has made tourism a significant economic factor of the town.
